Don’t Screw It up, Good Planets Are Hard to Find

Mars is too far and it’s a horrible desert

We are living at a critical time for humanity and the planet as a whole. We need to take care of the environment and find more sustainable formulations to interact with the environment. The key of the future will be our availability to evolve and adapt.

More than a year ago, I started thinking about building my house. I did a little course in Bio-construction with Ricardo Tamalet and that changed my mind. A new world was opened in front of my eyes.

Bio-construction is understood as a form of construction that respects living beings and the environment. It is also a type of sustainable architectural style whose aim is to achieve the integration of the building with its surroundings, minimizing its impact on them.”

I am increasingly involved in Bio-construction and the use of natural resources. I try to use them more consciously every day.

As I work in the IT industry, I will try to find and uncover connections between natural resources and technology.

Green Software

The trend for companies is to focus on using their technological equipment and energy more efficiently with little or no impact on the environment. More and more organizations store their records and information in digital form. This trend to reduce the use of own infrastructure — based on purchasing storage space in the cloud — represents a cost advantage for companies, but also means an exponential increase in energy consumption due to intensive use of equipment and data.

Clearly, adoption of green technology practices can bring economic benefits through energy savings, and commitment to the environment is recognized by the society, making people value the initiative and be willing to pay more for it.

Best practices for Sustainable Software (Linked-in): review this excellent article in Linked-in with a summary of the best practices for sustainable software.

Sustainable Software Engineering: this is a Microsoft training program dedicated to understanding the bad effects of software over the world and how to improve the software processes over it, according to their site “a Sustainable Software Engineer (SSE) can make decisions that have a meaningful impact on the carbon pollution of their applications.”

Green Software Foundation: it’s a non-profit foundation dedicated to reducing the emissions of carbon associated with software, for example improving the code to reduce the electricity used for big data centers.

The three keys of Green Software are:

  • Using less physical resources
  • Using less energy
  • Using energy more intelligently

Green Web Foundation: For the last decade, the Green Web Foundation has built open decision-making infrastructure to track and enable the transition to a fossil-free internet, including stewarding an open dataset to check if websites run on renewable energy, accessed over 2 billion times.

SiGRA: tool developed to help different companies to manage, analyse and administer environmental risks. For example: monitor and reduce the use of carbon dioxide and with this also reduce taxes.

Galileus: tool developed for hotels to manage garbage and energy. You can keep track of the room cleaning, monitor the employees, analyse the charge of garbage periodically and compare against a history.

Green Technology

Constant innovation drives us, and behind this there is a commitment to the world we live in. We innovate to make our planet a better place. We strive to use technology in the service of sustainable development, to have a positive impact on our society and to help reduce our carbon footprint. It is impossible to think about innovation without emphasizing technology as the main driver and sustainability as the goal to be achieved.

Currently, it is necessary to find solutions that make development compatible with maintaining habitable conditions on the planet, that is, to have sustainable development, using technologies that protect the environment and renewable energy to utilize resources, recycle materials, educate yourself and raise awareness about the importance and role we play on the planet.

Solar Panels: These panels convert the Sun’s light into electricity and it can be used for anything in your house like solar water heater, light , water pump, etc.

Electric vehicles: the electric vehicles area is growing up a lot. Many companies are developing electric motors to reduce the CO2 expelled to the air.

Smart Homes: Homes and workplaces consume large amounts of energy. Technology is changing all that, and toning it down, thanks to new products like smart thermostats and lights that can be individually dimmed when needed.

Environmental controls: Technology is very useful in ensuring compliance with laws and regulations to protect the environment. There are already drones to monitor flora and fauna, devices and systems to analyse air pollution levels, and very careful technical controls to check the quality of the various products that are put on the market.

Digital transformation: Thanks to the memory and storage systems in the Internet cloud companies and individuals have considerably reduced the use of paper.

Many companies are working hard developing technology to help the Earth. Here are some of them:

Wasp: this is a company that develops 3D printers, the curiosity here is that they designed a house printer that uses adobe instead of concrete.

Carbon Engineering: this company develops technologies that extract carbon dioxide from the air and generate green energy. Its operation involves capturing carbon dioxide from the air using giant fans and a chemical process capable of filtering. Ultimately, it turns them into small particles, which are then combined with hydrogen to create fuel.
